On translation

Brad East, The Doctrine of Scripture:

The Bible is “the word of the Lord” in translation or it is not the Lord’s word at all. For we begin with practice, not theory. And what must be true, given our starting point, is that the Hebrew scriptures translated into Greek, and the apostles’ words translated into Latin, and the texts of both translated into English are, without qualification, “the word of the Lord” to and for Christ’s body, gathered in his name. What alternative is there? We aren’t building Christianity from scratch. We are beginning in the middle (there is nowhere else to begin), with faith that Christ is risen and has sent his disciples into the world. That mission is constitutive of the church’s identity and work until the Lord’s return. Mission means translation, both of culture and of language (from chapter 1, “Source”).
